Wellington Green's 50th Anniversary Celebration

  • Wellington Green 561 Columbus Avenue Boston, Massachusetts, 02118 United States (map)

Join us to celebrate Wellington Green’s 50th Anniversary with music by $3 Dollar Shirt Band, light food and drinks.

Wellington Green is a wonderful example of what neighbors can accomplish when they come together with a shared vision for their community.

More than 50 years ago, a pioneering group of environmentalists looked at an empty lot in the heart of the dense South End and saw its potential. Through their dedication and hard work, that vacant space was transformed into a beautiful garden—a welcoming open space for neighbors, residents, and local businesses to enjoy.

Even the fencing surrounding the Green carries a piece of our neighborhood’s history. It was salvaged from the old railroad beds where the Southwest Corridor Park is located today, connecting Wellington Green to the remarkable transformation of the South End over the decades.

As we celebrate this community space, we want to recognize some of the neighborhood leaders who helped make this transformation possible, including Frank Jordan and Betsy Johnson, whose tireless efforts helped shape and strengthen our community.

We are also deeply grateful to Helen Jordan, who generously provided funds through her estate. Her private contribution has allowed us to purchase lighting, shrubs, seasonal plants, and flowers that continue to beautify Wellington Green while honoring the founding members who created this special place.

And we extend our heartfelt appreciation to Carey Erdman and Carl Kraenzel, who spend countless hours caring for and maintaining the Green. Their dedication ensures that this beautiful space remains a vibrant and welcoming place for everyone.

Wellington Green is more than a garden. It is a living reminder of what can happen when neighbors invest their time, energy, resources, and love in a place they call home. We are grateful to those who came before us, those who care for it today, and everyone who will help carry its legacy forward for generations to come.
